Exploring the Potential of Artificial General Intelligence
Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former safety researcher at OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT, delves into the realm of artificial general intelligence (AGI) in his latest essay series on artificial intelligence (AI).
Named 'Situational Awareness,' the series provides insights into the state of AI systems and their promising capabilities in the upcoming decade. Aschenbrenner's series of essays, comprising a 165-page PDF file updated on June 4, discusses the various forms of artificial intelligence, including AGI, artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), and artificial superintelligence (ASI).
In his essays, Aschenbrenner highlights the significance of AGI, an advanced form of AI that aims to equal or surpass human abilities in diverse cognitive tasks. He predicts the plausibility of AGI by 2027 and foresees that AGI machines will potentially outperform college graduates by 2025 or 2026.
According to Aschenbrenner, AGI machines are anticipated to achieve superintelligence by the end of the decade, surpassing human intellect. He emphasizes the transformative impact of AGI on national security and envisions a future where AI labs can train general-purpose language models within minutes, a process that currently takes months.
Aschenbrenner advocates for the recognition of AGI's impending reality, urging the AI community to acknowledge the emergence of AGI. He discusses the concept of 'AGI realism,' supported by key principles connected to national security and AI development in the United States.
Aschenbrenner's exploration of AGI comes following his departure from OpenAI amid allegations of information leaks. He is known for his alliance with OpenAI's chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, who was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to remove OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in 2023.
Additionally, Aschenbrenner has recently established an investment firm dedicated to AGI, with prominent backers such as Stripe CEO Patrick Collison. His latest series is also a tribute to Sutskever.
