Launch of the CNG Conversion App
The Federal Government of Nigeria officially launched the app for converting vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG). According to the government, the app, developed under the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), is designed to ease the transition from petrol (PMS) to CNG, providing drivers with an easy way to access information and services.
Features of the App
The app is available for download on Google Play and Apple Store. With it, users can:
Special attention is given to ride-hailing drivers, such as those using Uber and Bolt, who can receive significant discounts on conversion through the RideShare CNG Conversion Incentive Programme.
Issues Faced by Users
Despite the many advantages, users have encountered several technical issues while using the app. These include:
Currently, there is no in-app method for contacting the developers to resolve these issues.
Why Drivers are Choosing CNG
The transition to CNG is becoming increasingly popular among ride-hailing drivers in Nigeria as petrol prices continue to rise. One of the main advantages of CNG is the significant savings compared to petrol.
According to the Daily Trust, converting a vehicle to CNG may cost between 300,000 to 600,000 NGN, depending on the exchange rate. A full cylinder of CNG costs about 3,200 NGN, which is almost ten times cheaper than an equivalent amount of petrol.
The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has also developed a conversion plan for its members, allowing drivers to save up to 75% on fuel costs.
Conclusion
The launch of the CNG conversion app in Nigeria is a significant step towards transitioning to clean fuel. However, existing technical issues may substantially reduce user interest. It is hoped that developers will soon fix these flaws so the app can fully perform its functions.
