Developer Federico Carrone has been detained for 24 hours in Turkey but is now free and in Europe.
Release of Carrone
Federico Carrone announced his release after being detained for 24 hours in Turkey. In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to everyone who helped him during this challenging time. "I’m finally out, safe and free. There was a small moment where things looked very bad but thanks to help from many I got released," Carrone stated.
Reasons for Detention
Carrone stated that his detention was linked to accusations of helping misuse Ethereum in relation to a privacy protocol. He mentioned that this likely connects to a research paper from January 2022 that assessed user privacy on Ethereum and Tornado Cash. "We never helped anyone engage in illegal activity, it was purely research on mixers and their properties," Carrone added.
Support and Gratitude
During his detention, Carrone was worried that his mobile phone would be confiscated, preventing him from reaching out to anyone. Fortunately, close friends from several countries, including the UAE, UK, US, Europe, and Argentina, quickly responded and helped him, contacting high-ranking officials in Turkey. "I will never forget their help and hope to one day give back to everyone who supported me," he noted.
The situation with Carrone highlights a growing concern about the detention of cryptocurrency developers over their connections to privacy protocols. While he expresses his intent to continue fighting for his name, his actions demonstrate the importance of community support.
