The creator of the short-lived mobile game Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen, has distanced himself from a group claiming to bring back the game after a decade, with online clues suggesting possible crypto connections.
Flappy Bird's Return
On September 13, a group called The Flappy Bird Foundation announced the rerelease of Flappy Bird, claiming in a post on X that it took 'acquiring legal rights and even working with my predecessor' to launch the game.
Statement from Dong Nguyen
On September 15, Dong Nguyen posted on X for the first time since 2017 to refute the company's claims about reviving the game, stating he has no relation to it and does not support cryptocurrency.
Possible Crypto Connections
Researcher Varun Biniwale found hidden webpages for the Flappy Bird Foundation’s revived game, suggesting that cryptocurrency could play a role when the game launches. These pages were later taken offline. One of the pages mentioned that Flappy Bird 'will fly higher than ever on Solana as it soars into Web 3.0.' The page also referenced concepts like 'play and earn', 'stake to own', and 'free airdrops.' Other game prototypes invited players to connect a TON wallet for rewards and participate in exclusive events on Telegram.
While the official revival of Flappy Bird remains in question, the ties to cryptocurrency create additional interest and potential risks for fans and players.
