Flappy Bird, the viral mobile game that captivated millions in 2013, is back. This time, it launches on the Telegram platform with new Web3 and blockchain elements.

Flappy Bird Returns with a Blockchain Twist

An announcement about the re-launch of 'Flappy Bird' was made on September 16, 2024, by the Flappy Bird Foundation in collaboration with blockchain company Notcoin. The new version, titled 'Flap-a-TON,' aims to blend the nostalgia of the classic game with blockchain innovations. Players will no longer need a cryptocurrency wallet to participate, making the game accessible to a wide audience. As part of the Flap-a-TON Season 1 event, players can participate in a free minting event for the FLAPPY token.

New Features and Expansions

Though the gameplay remains true to its roots, developers plan to introduce new features in 2025. The game will be available not only on Telegram but also on other platforms like HTML5, web browsers, iOS, and Android. These new versions will introduce customizable characters, new game modes, and a progression system. According to Michael Roberts, the creative head behind Flappy Bird, 'Flappy Bird’s return on Telegram is just the beginning. By embracing Web3 and the TON ecosystem, we're ensuring that the game’s future is community-driven, secure, and accessible to all.'

Aiming to Redefine Casual Gaming

The collaboration between the Flappy Bird Foundation and Notcoin aims to reshape casual gaming by integrating blockchain elements. Sasha Plotvinov, the founder of Notcoin, noted the importance of using familiar IPs to drive Web3 adoption: 'Bringing well-known games like Flappy Bird into Web3 is key to making this technology more accessible and recognizable for the masses.' Despite these efforts, the original creator of Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen, has distanced himself from the new version of the game. In one of his posts, he expressed discontent with the incorporation of cryptocurrency: 'I did not sell anything. I also don't support crypto.' This led to some backlash from fans, who view the new Flappy Bird as potentially fraudulent.

Facing challenges and disagreements, the renewed Flappy Bird aims to attract an audience and redefine its place among casual games through blockchain technologies. Whether this approach will succeed remains to be seen, but the developers are confident that this is just the beginning of a new era for the popular game.
