The legendary mobile game Flappy Bird, which captivated millions in 2013, has returned after ten years. The game is now available on Telegram, incorporating new blockchain technology elements.

Flappy Bird Returns

The revival of the game is spearheaded by the Flappy Bird Foundation Group in collaboration with blockchain company Notcoin. The release took place on September 16, 2024. The new version, titled 'Flap-a-TON,' retains the simplicity of gameplay familiar to all fans and introduces Web3 elements such as blockchain technology. Participants can play without using a cryptocurrency wallet, making the game accessible to everyone, including blockchain enthusiasts and casual players. Additionally, a free event for minting FLAPPY tokens is being held, allowing players to participate in the classic Flappy Bird gameplay and the TON (The Open Network) ecosystem integration.

New Features and Expansions

The gameplay remains true to its roots, but the developers have announced new features and expansions. In 2025, Flappy Bird will be available on other platforms such as HTML5, web browsers, iOS, and Android. The new versions will feature customizable characters, new game modes, and a progression system.

Challenges and Controversies

However, the game's revival has not been without controversy, as Dong Nguyen, the original creator of Flappy Bird, publicly distanced himself from the new version. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his displeasure with the incorporation of cryptocurrency into the game.

Whether Flappy Bird will succeed in blending casual gaming with blockchain technology remains to be seen. As Michael Roberts noted, 'This is just the beginning.'
