Franklin Templeton's Move in the Ether ETF Competition

Jun 1, 2024

American multinational investment firm Franklin Templeton has made a significant stride in the competitive landscape by filing an amended S-1 application with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch a spot Ether (ETH) exchange-traded fund (ETF). The filing unveiled the fees associated with the proposed product, a groundbreaking disclosure among Ether ETF applicants. Franklin Templeton disclosed that sponsor fees, which accrue daily at an annualized rate of 0.19% of the net asset value of the Fund, will be a key aspect of the ETF. This fee revelation signifies the beginning of an 'ETH ETF fee war,' highlighted by ETF analyst Eric Balchunas. Balchunas noted the importance of fee structures in attracting investors to ETFs and commended Franklin Templeton for taking the lead in this aspect, setting the stage for a competitive environment among Ether ETF products. While other firms such as VanEck, Invesco, and Galaxy also submitted amended S-1 applications on the same day, none disclosed their sponsor fees, emphasizing Franklin Templeton's strategic move. The lack of fee disclosures from competitors underscores the intense competition in the ETF market. Similar to fee wars observed before the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January, the absence of fee disclosures signals a period of uncertainty in the Ether ETF race. Balchunas highlighted the significance of fee disclosures in the ETF market and pointed out the delay in fee war initiation due to the lack of disclosures from other applicants. The launch of ETH ETFs is eagerly anticipated, with optimistic timelines set by industry experts. Grayscale Investments and BlackRock have already submitted amendments, with expectations of more filings in the near future to address SEC comments and refine product offerings. Franklin Templeton's proactive approach in disclosing fees for its proposed Ether ETF marks the beginning of a new chapter in the competitive world of ETF products.
