Thomas John Sfraga, also known as "T.J. Stone," pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges in a federal court in Brooklyn. The U.S. Department of Justice accused Sfraga of deceiving investors with false promises of high returns through a fake cryptocurrency digital wallet. Instead of delivering on these promises, he diverted the funds for personal use and to appease previous victims of his scams.
Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, expressed that Sfraga had lied to friends, neighbors, and investors for a long time, leading to him swindling over $1.3 million of their savings. Additionally, Sfraga used names like "Vandelay Contracting Corp." and "Build Strong Homes LLC," reminiscent of a fictitious business from "Seinfeld," to entice investors into funding non-existent projects.
An FBI investigation uncovered that Sfraga's fraudulent activities extended to cryptocurrency staking, where he misrepresented the risks involved to potential investors. Despite his background in various fields like real estate development and cryptocurrency events hosting, Sfraga now faces a possible 20-year prison sentence and has been ordered to pay $1.33 million in restitution.
