Gelephu in Bhutan has become one of the first jurisdictions to officially incorporate cryptocurrencies into its strategic reserves.
Crypto as a Catalyst for Growth
Gelephu aims to become the 'Hong Kong of South Asia,' reaching over two billion people in the region. The inclusion of BTC, ETH, and BNB is part of a strategy to adopt high market cap and liquid digital assets. The recently enacted 'Application of Laws Act 2024' provides legal clarity for companies offering digital asset services, attracting businesses and boosting blockchain development in the area.
Strategic Partnerships and Vision
The Gelephu project has drawn international attention, including a partnership with the Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), which is opening an office in Bhutan. In March 2025, a meeting with government officials and industry leaders is planned to discuss the integration of digital assets into reserves and to form an international advisory panel.
Bhutan’s Lead in Sustainable Crypto Adoption
Bhutan's crypto adoption sets it apart from neighboring countries like India. Bhutan holds $1 billion in Bitcoin compared to El Salvador's $335 million. Its success is attributed to the ability to power large-scale Bitcoin mining with hydropower, which accounts for 30% of GDP and has the potential to generate 23,760 MW of electricity.
Bhutan and Gelephu continue to lead the way in integrating cryptocurrencies into the economy, providing an example for other countries in the region.
