Hong Kong Investment Banking Giant Introduces First Tokenized Commercial Paper on Ethereum

Apr 2, 2024

Reported by the HKEJ, GF Securities, a prominent investment banking giant in Hong Kong, has launched the first tokenized commercial paper on the Ethereum blockchain in Hong Kong. This move aims to advance the local digital asset ecosystem and reinforce Hong Kong's leading role in merging conventional financial systems with blockchain technology.

Tokenization involves converting asset rights into digital tokens on a blockchain platform. GF Securities' initiative is a response to the increasing global interest in Real World Assets (RWA) tokenization, which is part of the broader trend of digitalizing physical assets. ABT Tech, a blockchain company based in Hong Kong, will provide technical support for this project.

The issuance complies with the regulatory standards established by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) in November, which introduced a regulatory framework for innovative financial instruments in the region. The use of the Ethereum blockchain offers various benefits, allowing investors to monitor and manage their investments independently and offering greater flexibility. Ethereum's platform also allows for the creation of supplementary tools and integrated management solutions, lowering entry barriers and democratizing investment access. BlackRock utilized Ethereum for its BUIDL launch, further embracing blockchain tokenization.

Globally, RWA tokenization is seen as the next phase of cryptocurrency development and has the potential to bring trillions of dollars into the blockchain industry. Reports indicate that tokenized assets may reach a market value of $16 trillion by 2030. Ripple, a U.S.-based blockchain payments company, is aiming to participate in the growing tokenization industry by planning to revolutionize the real estate sector through tokenization. Ripple was involved in the launch of e-HKD, the digital Hong Kong dollar.

GF Securities' recent move follows BOCI, the Bank of China's investment banking division, partnering with UBS to issue tokenized notes on Ethereum in June 2023. Stay informed with the latest updates on Ethereum from Vitalik Buterin by reading more here.
