India has paused plans to acquire U.S. military equipment worth billions of dollars in response to increased tariffs imposed by President Trump.
Tariffs Trigger Diplomatic Chill
Indian officials reported that the country has halted deals for Stryker combat vehicles, Javelin anti-tank missiles, and Boeing P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The tariffs were raised from 25% to 50% on August 6 as punishment for continuing imports from Russia.
Partnership Under Strain
Previously, Trump and Prime Minister Modi had pledged to deepen defense ties; however, the current tariffs have exposed rifts in their relationship. Indian officials criticized Washington for continuing trade with Moscow.
India Balancing Between Moscow and Washington
Despite the current chill, officials maintain that defense relations with the U.S. continue. India is prepared to consider reducing purchases of Russian arms if competitive alternatives arise.
Recent events illustrate the deterioration of diplomatic relations between India and the U.S., which may impact future security cooperation.
