The Indonesian government has appealed to Meta and TikTok to enhance moderation of harmful content, including disinformation.
Platform Summons
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) summoned representatives from TikTok, as well as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, to discuss disinformation and fake news. This initiative follows the growing trend of social media as a news source, which has also fueled the spread of misinformation.
Public Protests and Influence of Disinformation
The issue of disinformation has sparked public outrage, leading to mass protests. Komdigi Deputy Minister Angga Raka Prabowo stated that disinformation on the platforms angered communities, resulting in protests on August 25. He noted that monitoring initiatives showed that most disinformation content is widely spread on TikTok and Instagram.
Government's Future Steps
The Indonesian government is also set to reach out to other social platforms, urging them to remove content related to pornography and online gambling. Meetings with TikTok and Meta are planned, with invitations extended to Elon Musk's X platform and YouTube. Angga emphasized that the spread of disinformation is a global issue, echoed in other countries.
The Indonesian government's initiatives highlight the importance of enhanced content moderation on social platforms to prevent the negative impacts of disinformation on society.
