The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the beginning of moves to harness the 6GHz spectrum to improve internet speed in the country. This announcement was made during the Stakeholders' Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies in Lagos.

Key advantages of using the 6GHz spectrum

According to the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, the 6GHz spectrum offers significantly faster data rates and transmission speeds, which is crucial for Nigeria's expanding digital landscape. This decision was made in response to the capacity constraints faced by the current 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. Implementing the new spectrum will help alleviate network congestion and provide more robust internet connectivity.

Support for telecom operators and financial challenges

The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, urged the government to support telecom operators in upgrading their networks to accommodate the new spectrum. Speaking on behalf of Adebayo, ALTON's Executive Secretary, Gbolahan Awonuga, highlighted the financial challenges faced by operators in expanding their networks and called for governmental assistance. 'We need funds to upgrade our infrastructure and import equipment to benefit from the 6GHz spectrum,' he stated.

What you need to know about the 6GHz spectrum

The 6GHz spectrum spans frequencies from 5.925 GHz to 7.125 GHz and is used for wireless communications, particularly for Wi-Fi 6E and other advanced technologies. It offers higher data rates and greater capacity compared to previous bands. The 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz frequency bands represent specific RF frequency bands approved for wireless use, with each band comparable to different types of roads and their lane widths.

The decision to open the 6GHz frequency band for unlicensed Wi-Fi use in Nigeria is set to revolutionize broadband connectivity, providing faster and more reliable connections, especially in high-demand environments.
