Prominent investor Christian Angermayer has left the UK and moved to the Swiss Bitcoin hub of Lugano, citing planned changes in the UK's tax framework.

Reasons for Christian Angermayer's Move

German-born Christian Angermayer previously had 'non-domiciled' status in the UK, allowing him to avoid taxes on overseas income and earnings for up to 15 years. However, this was reduced to 4 years in March 2024. Moreover, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour Party plans to eliminate inheritance tax breaks on assets held in overseas trusts. Angermayer stated that the planned changes to the non-dom framework are a 'huge mistake' and described it as 'a bigger act of national self-harm than Brexit.'

Despite Angermayer's departure, Apeiron's London office will remain open. Angermayer recently spoke at the Token2049 conference about the link between Bitcoin and psychedelics, noting that both free people from their governments and egos, respectively.

Lugano and Its Cryptocurrency Potential

Lugano, a small town in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, has become one of the largest Bitcoin circular economies since stablecoin issuer Tether partnered with local authorities in 2022 to make its payment systems more crypto-friendly. Approximately 250 merchants in the city accept Bitcoin payments, and Tether is also widely accepted. Lugano has been hosting the Bitcoin-themed conference 'Plan ₿ Forum' annually since 2022. In addition to Bitcoin, Angermayer invests in crypto-focused Samara Asset Group and Bitcoin miner Northern Data AG. He is also one of the founders of Enhanced Games, an alternative competition to the Olympics that encourages the use of performance-enhancing drugs, backed by former PayPal CEO Peter Thiel.

Christian Angermayer's move to Lugano highlights the growing appeal of crypto-friendly jurisdictions amidst changing tax regulations in various countries.
