Japan's Prime Minister has expressed doubts about adopting Bitcoin reserves following the US due to a lack of information.
Lack of Info on Bitcoin Reserves
Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that his government lacks enough information about the strategic Bitcoin reserve plans of countries like the US to determine whether Japan should implement one. "It is difficult for the government to express its views," Ishiba said.
Possible Following of the US
The statement came after a question from Satoshi Hamada, a member of the House of Councilors, regarding Bitcoin reserves introduction that the US and other countries are proceeding with. Hamada believes Japan should follow the US example and consider converting some of its foreign exchange reserves into crypto assets like Bitcoin. Ishiba noted that crypto assets do not fall under the foreign exchange category.
Stablecoin Prospects in Japan
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse noted the potential demand for Japanese yen stablecoins, predicting their growing popularity in the future. In an interview, he stated, "People will want to hold yen stablecoins, and I think that is only a matter of time." Garlinghouse added that despite being conservative, the Japanese market provides clarity in cryptocurrency regulation.
While Japan considers the Bitcoin reserves option, the country's regulatory approach towards cryptocurrencies and stablecoins remains stabilizing.
