Judicial Ruling: 21 Foreign Nationals Convicted for Cybercrime in Nigeria

A sitting at the Federal High Court in Nigeria saw 21 foreign nationals convicted of cybercrimes.

Twenty-one foreign nationals, including citizens from China, Indonesia, Brazil, and others, were found guilty in case number FHC/ABJ/CR/599/2024 for their involvement in high-level cybercrime activities. They were arrested in Abuja on November 3, 2024, for operating a fraudulent online platform.

Court Findings and Outcomes

Justice Ekerete Akpan ruled that each convicted individual must pay a fine of 1 million naira and leave Nigeria within six working days. The ruling was based on a plea bargain agreement between the convicts and the prosecution.

This case is part of broader efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat cybercrime. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigeria Police have intensified operations targeting both local and foreign offenders.
