French football star Kylian Mbappe's X account was hacked to promote $MBAPPE token, which soon lost all its value.
Mbappe’s Account Hacked
Last week, the X (formerly Twitter) account of French football star Kylian Mbappe was reportedly hacked. An unidentified hacker used his account to launch and promote a token named $MBAPPE to his 14.4 million followers on the platform.
Mbappe Meme Coin Rug Pull
The hacker quickly published a contract for a cryptocurrency created on the platform pump.fun, and soon sold the entire supply of the meme coin, crashing its value to zero. One user, unaware of the scam, spent 7,156 Solana (approx. $1.03 million) to buy the token but lost almost all their money within an hour. Another trader, who invested just 0.2 Sol ($29), managed to earn around $125.16 thousand in just a few minutes.
Other Hacking Incidents
Recently, the official Instagram account of McDonald's was also hacked. Hackers promoted a meme coin named Grimace, which saw its market cap soar to $20 million before plummeting below $1 million. The hackers even altered the account bio, claiming they had stolen $700 thousand and urging users to invest via Pump.fun.
These incidents highlight the need for increased security for celebrity social media accounts and serve as a warning to users about participating in suspicious cryptocurrency projects.
