French football star Kylian Mbappe's X account was hacked, leading to the promotion of a fraudulent $MBAPPE token. The incident resulted in significant losses among investors.
Incident Details
The X account of Real Madrid’s footballer Kylian Mbappe was hacked on Thursday. The hacker used the account to promote the $MBAPPE token. Within minutes, the token's market capitalization reached tens of millions of dollars, attracting many investors.
Victims of the Scam
The incident affected many individuals, some of whom lost considerable amounts of money. One user invested 7,156 Solana ($1,032,741) in $MBAPPE, but within an hour, the value of their portfolio had dropped to just $9,200. However, some investors managed to profit from the situation. One such investor bought $2 of SOL and sold the $MBAPPE tokens, earning 1,398 SOL or about $200,000.
Growth of Celebrity-Targeted Crypto Scams
The hacking of Mbappe's account is part of a broader trend where cybercriminals use celebrities to push fake cryptocurrency projects. Earlier this month, the official Instagram account of McDonald's was hacked, leading to the promotion of the Grimace token (GRIMACE30045-USD).
This incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and security in the cryptocurrency space, especially for those using social media.
