The Lagos State government has announced the launch of the Omi Eko project, which includes the introduction of electric boats to enhance water transportation in the region.
Features of the Omi Eko Project
The Omi Eko project plans to introduce over 72 electric vessels and 25 new jetties. The goal of the project is to reduce congestion on Lagos roads and open up new opportunities for water transportation. State Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi noted that the project will start in October.
Advantages of Water Transportation
According to Osiyemi, water transportation is a safer option compared to traveling by road, and travel times on water routes are significantly shorter. However, despite these advantages, many residents still have fears about using water transport. The introduction of the Omi Eko project aims to boost citizens' confidence in the safety of water routes.
Sustainability and Future Plans
The project entails the use of electric vessels, which is expected to help reduce carbon emissions and decrease operational costs by 70%. The commissioner highlighted that the cost efficiency of electricity will make transportation more accessible, aligning with the concept of intermodal transport. Additionally, channelization and dredging will be carried out to ensure safe passage for vessels.
The Omi Eko project represents an important step towards developing sustainable and efficient water transportation in Lagos, addressing issues related to road traffic and environmental concerns.
