Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has initiated legal action against Yungfeng Sun and Hongnam Cheung for their alleged involvement in a racketeering scheme. This scheme involved the deployment of deceptive crypto mobile applications to defraud users. These fraudulent apps were circulated through various channels such as text messages, online videos, and affiliate marketing programs, with the intention of deceiving individuals into downloading the apps that appeared legitimate but restricted users from withdrawing their funds.

The accused individuals reportedly began this scheme in 2019 by releasing 87 fake apps on the Google Play Store, resulting in scamming around 100,000 people. While Google has removed these apps from its platform, it stated that the damages incurred amounted to $75,000 due to this fraudulent operation.

As per reports, Google accused the defendants of misrepresenting their identities and locations while submitting their apps to the Play Store. The defendants were also accused of altering their computer network infrastructure and user accounts to maintain anonymity.

This lawsuit marks a significant move on Google's part as it represents the first instance where a major tech firm has taken legal action against crypto fraudulence. Google aims to set a precedent with this lawsuit to deter future perpetrators and safeguard its users from falling victim to similar cryptocurrency scams.

In an interview with CNBC, Halimah DeLaine Prado, Google's general counsel, emphasized the importance of holding these fraudulent actors accountable to protect users from exploitation.
