Legal Dispute over V-Shape Technology in Crypto Mining Industry
Digital Shovel Holdings Inc., a technology firm, has initiated legal action against RK Mission Critical LLC, RK Mechanical LLC, and RK Industries LLC in the US District Court for the District of Colorado. The lawsuit, publicized through an official announcement, alleges that RK Mission Critical and related entities have breached Digital Shovel's patents concerning their V-Shape technology used in crypto mining containers.
The patented V-Shape technology, which was developed in 2018 and officially patented between 2022 and 2024, aims to enhance miner density in crypto mining containers by up to 30%, thereby offering significant operational advantages within the crypto mining sector.
According to the legal complaint, Compute North, a client of RK Mission Critical, initially expressed interest in licensing the V-Shape technology from Digital Shovel in 2019. However, Digital Shovel declined the request. Subsequently, RK Mission Critical purportedly manufactured containers resembling Digital Shovel's patented design closely, leading to some employees mistaking them for their own products.
The complaint contends that the defendants, instead of engaging in fair competition, have allegedly taken advantage of Digital Shovel’s innovative technologies protected through patents, which the company has diligently developed.
CEO Scot Johnson of Digital Shovel revealed that RK Mission Critical's marketing indicated the sale of approximately 850 units, each priced at over $200,000, resulting in total sales revenue of around $170 million. Johnson emphasized that the primary objective is to assert and safeguard their intellectual property rights against RK Mission Critical, focusing on the protection of their innovation rather than targeting end users or publicly traded mining companies utilizing the contested containers.
Although Digital Shovel claims that RK Mission Critical was aware of the pending patents since 2021, the latter purportedly continued production without the necessary authorization. The absence of settlement discussions prompted Digital Shovel to pursue legal remedies. The company's ultimate goal is to secure compensation and a legal injunction to cease the further sale of the contested containers in question.
