Two major Japanese media groups, Nikkei and Asahi Shimbum, have filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI, accusing the company of copyright infringement.
Lawsuit in Tokyo District Court
Nikkei and Asahi Shimbum have filed a lawsuit in court, claiming that Perplexity AI used their content without permission. By providing incorrect information attributed to their articles, the company allegedly misrepresented the content of their pieces. This is not the first instance of media organizations challenging AI companies.
Demands of the Media Groups
According to reports, both media groups are demanding 2.2 billion yen (approximately $14.7 million) in damages. They also want Perplexity to delete any stored articles.
Growing Rift Between AI and Publishers
Legal experts state that these cases are 'test cases.' In Japan, media players like Yomiuri have also started filing lawsuits. In the US, similar allegations have been made by the New York Post and Dow Jones.
The lawsuit against Perplexity AI highlights an increasing rift between media publishers and AI companies concerning the control and profit from news distribution.
