Malaysian authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining by destroying nearly 1,000 bitcoin mining rigs. This measure aims to address the issue of power theft linked to crypto mining, which has become a significant challenge in the region.
Operation and Reasons for Destruction
The operation to destroy the mining rigs took place in the Perak Tengah district, where a steamroller crushed 985 rigs valued at approximately 1.98 million Malaysian ringgits ($452,500). This action continues Malaysia's efforts to combat power theft used for cryptocurrency mining.
Enforcement Actions and Arrests
The destroyed rigs were confiscated during enforcement operations conducted from 2022 through April of this year. These actions are accompanied by a series of similar measures aimed at reducing illegal power usage for bitcoin mining. Authorities in the Sepang district arrested seven individuals suspected of operating bitcoin mining operations involving electricity theft.

Southeast Asia attracts crypto miners due to low electricity costs, but this also leads to problems with power theft and environmental challenges. Between 2018 and 2023, crypto miners in Malaysia stole RM3.4 billion worth of electricity (approximately $763 million), highlighting the need for stricter enforcement measures.
