In a significant crackdown, Nigeria's EFCC arrested 792 suspects in a global cryptocurrency and romance scam operation.
Global Syndicate Uncovered
The arrested individuals include both local and foreign nationals, with 148 Chinese, 40 Filipinos, and individuals from Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Indonesia. This is Nigeria's largest operation of its kind, aimed at exposing a global network specializing in crypto scams and romantic fraud.
Romance and Crypto Scams at the Core
The scams, known as *pig butchering*, involve creating fake romantic relationships with victims on social platforms. Once trust was gained, the scammers pressured them into investing in non-existent crypto schemes. The victims were primarily from the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
The Role of Foreign Nationals
Foreigners involved trained locals on how to conduct the fraud. Scammers used phishing tactics and fake profiles to lure victims. Reports indicate that Chinese criminal syndicates are expanding in regions with less robust cybersecurity, such as Africa and Eastern Europe.
A sophisticated fraud operation was uncovered in Lagos, equipped to perpetrate global scams. The detained individuals are under custody while EFCC works with international partners to explore connections with organized crime.
