Pump[dot]fun, a platform renowned for launching meme coins, has revised its fee structure, making it free for users to create tokens. The $2 fee will now be transferred to the token's first buyer. Additionally, creators can earn 0.50 SOL ($80) if their tokens are listed on Raydium, a decentralized exchange (DEX) on the Solana blockchain.
Pump[dot]fun's New Strategy
Pump[dot]fun aims to attract more users and increase the number of successful token launches with its new fee structure and incentives. According to the platform, the new structure “unlocks the use case of someone creating a coin without buying any of its supply.” This makes it easier for creators to launch tokens without investing in their projects initially.
The Bonding Curve Mechanism
Pump[dot]fun employs a unique bonding curve mechanism for launching and trading tokens. This model ensures fair access to new coins, preventing pre-sale advantages common in other crypto projects. A token starts at a base price and predictably increases as more people buy it. This approach guarantees liquidity and ensures a continuous market for the coin.
Once a token reaches a market cap of $69,000, it qualifies for listing on Raydium, creating a liquidity pool that allows the token to trade more widely beyond the Pump[dot]fun platform. The platform also burns liquidity provider (LP) tokens after the token goes live on Raydium, effectively locking the liquidity and ensuring it cannot become entirely illiquid, even if prices drop significantly.
Platform's Popularity Amid Meme Coin Boom
Pump[dot]fun has gained significant traction during the recent meme coin boom, thanks to its user-friendly interface and Solana's low transaction fees. The platform has seen a surge in the creation of politically-themed cryptocurrencies, celebrity tokens, and other meme coins. However, data from Dune Analytics shows that only a small percentage of tokens launched on Pump[dot]fun make it to Raydium, with success rates fluctuating between 1.21% and 1.41% since May and reaching an all-time high of 2.56% in February.
Despite the low success rate, platform revenue has soared. In July last year, Pump[dot]fun generated $2 million in daily revenue, surpassing Ethereum's $1.91 million and becoming the largest revenue generator of any blockchain, according to DefiLlama.
With strategic changes, Pump[dot]fun promises easier token launches and new incentives for creators. Despite only a small percentage of projects reaching Raydium, the platform itself continues to thrive, establishing itself as a key player in the meme cryptocurrency market.
