Meme Stocks Taking the Spotlight Again

Mar 28, 2024

Meme stocks are gaining investor interest, surpassing small-cap stocks in terms of popularity. While the Russell 2000 index has had a 3.9% gain year-to-date, the S&P 500 is approaching a 10% gain for the same period.

Several meme stocks have seen significant returns, especially after Reddit's successful IPO at $47 per share. This has led to increased trading activity in the market characterized as "momentum-driven." The focus has shifted from stock fundamentals to hype.

Below are three meme stocks that have garnered public attention:

Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT)

Since former President Trump faced backlash from the media and legal battles, he has gained popularity. This was reflected in the launch of his Twitter alternative, Truth Social, which saw a surge in users. The company's market cap fluctuated between $5.6 billion and $4 billion until the ticker symbol changed from "DWAC" to "DJT." DJT shares rose by 42% in a month and have seen a 277% year-to-date performance.

Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ: HOOD)

Robinhood stock has surged by 60% year-to-date, outpacing the S&P 500. Despite significant net losses in previous years, Robinhood reported a net income of $30 million in Q4 2023. Analysts predict an average price target of $16.58, suggesting the stock may be overbought.

Iamgold Corporation (NASDAQ: IAG)

Iamgold has seen a 28% gain year-to-date, mainly due to revenue from gold production and exploration. The company reported a 43.6% revenue growth in Q4 2023 but still had a net loss of $9.4 million. Analysts estimate an average price target of $2.95 for IAG shares.

Investors looking for exposure to meme stocks or gold mining sectors should consider these stocks at favorable price levels.
