Memecoins such as Dogwifhat and PEPE experienced remarkable growth in 2024. The surge in these cryptocurrencies was fueled by social media hype and significant price spikes. In the crypto market, the first half of 2024 witnessed a total rise of $661 billion. While Bitcoin demonstrated a notable increase of 48%, memecoins outperformed with even higher gains.
Shiba Inu-themed tokens played a pivotal role in driving the memecoin rally. For instance, Floki skyrocketed by 392%, whereas Dogecoin saw a more modest uptick of 35%.
The beginning of 2024 marked a significant event in the digital assets sphere with the introduction of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Despite Bitcoin attracting substantial institutional interest, lesser-known cryptocurrencies, particularly memecoins, saw unprecedented growth, overshadowing their more established counterparts.
Data from CoinGecko revealed a staggering increase of $661 billion in the overall cryptocurrency market value during the initial six months of the year. Bitcoin itself contributed $409 billion to this surge, indicating a substantial 48% rise. This surge was primarily attributed to institutional investors recognizing the potential of Bitcoin. Memecoins, on the other hand, possess limited intrinsic value but exhibit erratic price fluctuations driven by social media hype and speculative trading.
A recent report highlighted the outstanding performance of Dogwifhat, which recorded a remarkable 1,306% surge, elevating its market capitalization to $2.1 billion. Similarly, PEPE, inspired by the popular meme frog associated with certain online communities, experienced an 815% increase, reaching a market cap of $5 billion.
