Munchables Developer Resolves $62.8 Million Stolen Ether Hack Without Ransom

Apr 1, 2024

A Munchables game developer returned $62.8 million in Ether that was stolen during a security breach without requesting any ransom. The breach occurred on March 26, leading to a loss of over 17,400 ETH from the GameFi application. Munchables collaborated with experts in blockchain security to trace the stolen assets back to the developer responsible for the exploit. The individual, known as "Werewolves0943," with ties to North Korea, was hired by the Munchables team, which led to the vulnerability. By March 27, the developer agreed to return the stolen Ether, providing the necessary keys for recovering the user funds. Pacman, the creator of the Blast Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, expressed gratitude to those involved in resolving the situation, mentioning that the developer returned all the funds without any ransom demands. Users impacted by the hack were advised to only follow official communications to avoid falling victim to refund scams. The incident is part of a series of hacks in the DeFi space, including one where a hacker extracted funds from ParaSwap addresses and efforts were made to reclaim and refund the affected users. Efforts have been taken to shore up security in these protocols, but ongoing risks remain in the DeFi sector.
