Nigeria Withdraws Tax Allegations Against Binance Executives

Jun 14, 2024

The Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has revoked tax accusations against two senior Binance officials, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla. However, the accusations have now shifted solely to Binance, raising speculation on the way forward for the prominent cryptocurrency firm.

This retraction of accusations follows intense global pressure, including a plea from U.S. federal prosecutors urging the U.S. Department of Justice to influence the Nigerian government.

Accusations Focused on Binance

Initially, the FIRS had accused both Gambaryan and Anjarwalla of tax offenses. However, in a recent decision, the agency has chosen to reposition these accusations solely towards Binance, specifically through its local representative.

Consequently, Gambaryan is no longer required to participate in the tax case, with Binance being the lone defendant.

Observers speculate that the dismissal of charges against the executives might have been influenced by the recent petition to the U.S. Department of Justice, where over 100 former high-ranking officials advocated for action on Nigeria.

The petition highlighted concerns about the conditions in Kuje Prison, where Gambaryan was detained, a facility notorious for housing some of Nigeria's most dangerous criminals.

Ongoing Money Laundering Investigation

Despite these developments, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla are not entirely clear of legal issues. They still face charges in a separate money laundering case. The next court session for this case is scheduled for June 19, where a plea for an enforcement order of fundamental rights will be explored.

The trial is set to reconvene on June 20, with Gambaryan remaining in detention at Kuje Prison.
