In light of recent threats and attacks on Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding critical information in the sector.
Issue of Telecom Infrastructure Damage
The NCC stated that the Nigerian telecommunications sector is facing an alarming surge in sabotage, with an average of 1,744 attacks reported weekly. These incidents include approximately 1,100 fiber cuts and 99 thefts, which significantly threaten service quality and network expansion.
Engagement with NOGASA and NSA
The NCC held discussions with NOGASA and the National Security Adviser, mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on the risks of service disruptions to national security and the economy. NSA emphasized that any form of disruption to telecom infrastructure could have serious implications for economic stability.
Call for Public Support in Infrastructure Protection
The NCC urged Nigerian citizens to view telecommunications infrastructure as a shared national asset. The commission will continue to work alongside security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the infrastructure’s protection, with NCC's Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, stressing compliance with technical standards.
