An Airbnb host, Ashley, has added an unusual new rule for her guests after discovering them mining cryptocurrency at her property.
Unusual Discovery by the Host
Ashley shared on TikTok that her guests left the house in great condition and received a five-star review. However, she was shocked to receive a $1,500 electricity bill. Footage from her external security cameras showed that the guests had brought in over ten computer rigs and set up a makeshift electric vehicle charging station.
Consequences of Crypto Mining
After contacting the guests and providing evidence, they admitted to mining crypto during their three-week stay, reportedly earning over $100,000. Ashley initially struggled to get the guests to cover the bill, but Airbnb intervened and ensured payment was made.
New Rules in Airbnb
Following the incident, Ashley added 'no crypto-mining' and 'no electric vehicle charging' to her house rules. Other Airbnb hosts have reportedly implemented similar measures in response to the energy-intensive nature of cryptocurrency mining, which is known to be a significant drain on electricity resources.
The incident with Ashley and her guests highlights the impact of cryptocurrency mining in rented homes, leading to updated rules to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
