A Bitcoin wallet that had been dormant since 2014 suddenly 'woke up' and moved over 174 bitcoins worth more than $10.2 million.
Activity After a Decade
Blockchain data showed that the Bitcoin wallet that received 174.88 BTC on January 8, 2014, moved funds for the first time on August 16, 2024. This transfer comes after a decade during which Bitcoin’s price soared to highs of $73,000 before returning to current levels.
Value and Fees
At the time of receiving the bitcoins, BTC was valued at nearly $142,000 in 2014. By the time the wallet was activated, the 174.88 BTC were worth over $10.2 million. The transaction fee was 67,500 satoshis, or $39.43, which is quite low. However, according to mempool details, this was still an overpayment of 50x, ensuring quick confirmation of the $10.2 million transaction.
Frequent Activation of Old Wallets
Bitcoin wallets that have been dormant for extended periods have recently started to activate more frequently. This includes wallets from the era of Bitcoin’s creation, known as 'Satoshi-era addresses.' In recent months, multiple dormant wallets have suddenly moved, including one that transferred $6.9 million in BTC after 12 years and another that sent $3 million in BTC to Binance after over 14 years of inactivity. According to BitInfoCharts, since January 2024, the total amount of BTC in dormant wallets has significantly increased, reaching approximately 18.3 million BTC.
The activation of dormant Bitcoin wallets can impact the market and cryptocurrency prices, causing substantial volatility. Monitoring these movements can help anticipate potential price swings.
