A recent outage in the Polygon Heimdall V2 network was caused by a suspected consensus bug. However, the service was restored within the hour.
Reasons for the Outage
The Heimdall V2 outage occurred on Wednesday around 9:30 UTC due to an unidentified validator exiting the network. Polygon reported that this outage did not affect the Bor layer, which is responsible for block production and transaction processing.
Impact on the Blockchain
Block production on the Bor layer remained uninterrupted during the downtime, with any discrepancies between the network's actual uptime and block explorers being resolved. Polygon representatives noted sync inconsistencies emerging across several RPC providers.
Heimdall V2 Upgrade
The Heimdall V2 upgrade was launched in early July, reducing finality times to five seconds and upgrading the network's tech stack. Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal noted that this upgrade is the most technically complex in the network's history.
The recovery of Heimdall V2 highlights the importance of consistent uptime for blockchain networks, particularly given the increasing complexity and load.
