Pope Francis to Participate in G7 AI Summit

Apr 27, 2024

Confirmation has been given that Pope Francis will take part in the upcoming G7 Summit in Italy, which will focus on the ethics and regulations of artificial intelligence. This event marks the first time a pope will be involved in a G7 meeting.

Reports indicate that the summit, scheduled for June 13-15 in Puglia, will convene leaders from the seven largest advanced economies in the world, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The primary discussion topics will revolve around AI governance and the establishment of an ethical framework.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who currently holds the rotating G7 presidency, extended an invitation to the Pope, which was officially confirmed this week. Meloni emphasized that the Pope's participation is a significant honor for Italy and the entire G7. It is believed that the Pope's involvement will be instrumental in shaping regulations, ethics, and cultural aspects related to artificial intelligence.

The Vatican has been increasingly vocal about AI ethics, with initiatives such as the 2020 "Rome Call for AI Ethics." In his message for the 2024 World Peace Day, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of developing moral wisdom to ensure that artificial intelligence serves human well-being.
