Rare Satoshi Mined in Fourth Bitcoin Halving Block Sold for Over $2 Million

Apr 27, 2024

An exceptionally rare satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, was sold for 33.3 Bitcoin (BTC), equivalent to approximately $2.13 million. This unique satoshi, known as an “epic sat,” was auctioned off on April 25 on the cryptocurrency exchange CoinEx Global. The winning bidder acquired ownership rights to “sat number 1,968,750,000,000,000” after offering 33.3 Bitcoin. The auction received 34 bids in total, with the runner-up bidder bidding 20 Bitcoin for the rare sat.

CoinEx Global announced the end of the auction, emphasizing that it symbolized more than just a bidding event. The sale represented community recognition and the broader acceptance of Bitcoin. The concept of epic sats is based on the Ordinals number system, where each satoshi is given a unique sequence number according to mining timestamps. Only four of these rare sats exist due to the four Bitcoin halvings that have occurred. While an ordinary satoshi's value is $0.00065, specific sats hold higher collectible value because of their distinct identifiers, reflecting the scarcity of these rare sats.
