The French political party Rassemblement National (RN) under Marine Le Pen is showing interest in Bitcoin mining using excess nuclear energy. This change in stance comes amid shifting political attitudes towards cryptocurrencies.
Party RN's Position on Cryptocurrencies
Previously, RN led by Marine Le Pen was against the use of cryptocurrencies. In 2016, Le Pen called for a ban on cryptocurrencies in France, arguing that virtual money leads to a loss of control over personal finances.
Bitcoin Mining Initiatives
During a recent visit to the Flamanville nuclear plant, Le Pen supported the idea of using idle nuclear energy for Bitcoin mining. According to Le Monde, RN lawmaker Aurélien Lopez-Liguori has spearheaded a bill to create mining infrastructure at EDF-operated sites. He emphasized that the party aims to use every bit of energy produced to eliminate waste.
Internal Party Disputes on Crypto
Despite the new pro-crypto stance, there are contradicting opinions within the party. RN finance lead Jean-Philippe Tanguy asserts that the party should not endorse currency independence and should reaffirm its belief in centralized monetary policy.
The shift in Rassemblement National's position on cryptocurrencies illustrates changing views on Bitcoin in France, yet internal disputes may impact the party's ongoing efforts in this domain.
