Russia, the USA, and Japan have announced North Korea's involvement in a major cryptocurrency theft amounting to $659 million last year, funding illicit weapon programs.

Official Statement

A joint statement from Russia, the USA, and Japan accuses North Korea of a series of cryptocurrency heists. The statement highlights that DPRK cyber programs pose a serious threat to the global financial system.

The DPRK’s cyber program is a serious danger to the safety and stability of the international financial system.

Targeted Crypto Exchanges

Some of the affected platforms included India's WazirX exchange, losing $235 million, and Radiant Capital, which faced losses of $50 million. Additionally, $374.13 million were siphoned off from DMM Bitcoin, Upbit, and Rain Management.

DPRK's Cyber Program Threat

Groups like Lazarus actively employ stealthy methods, including malware, to conduct attacks. Blockchain companies and crypto exchanges are warned of ongoing risks and urged to strengthen their defenses and avoid employing North Korean IT workers.

Russia, the USA, and Japan are determined to continue their joint efforts to counteract North Korea’s cyber threats and recover the stolen funds.
