Contrary to previous reports, Russia is not planning to enforce a complete ban on cryptocurrency transactions in the country. Anton Gorelkin, the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies, and Communications, clarified this misinformation.
Earlier speculations concerning a potential ban on cryptocurrency activity were dismissed by Gorelkin. While a new bill aims to regulate cryptocurrency exchanges in Russia, it does not intend to eliminate all cryptocurrency transactions.
The proposed legislation seeks to establish measures to identify illegal or criminal crypto transactions within the country. Gorelkin emphasized that the bill's goal is not to make all cryptocurrency activities illegal, but rather to control exchanges and platforms not associated with government pilot programs.
Additionally, the restriction on crypto exchange operations is designed to mitigate the risk of exposure to Western sanctions. Despite these restrictions, Russian crypto users can still access foreign cryptocurrency exchanges and over-the-counter service providers.
Recent reports indicate that some individuals and businesses in Russia are turning to cryptocurrencies to evade close scrutiny amid growing sanctions.
