Sam Bankman-Fried Acknowledges Remorse After Sentencing to 25 Years in Prison

Apr 2, 2024

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried expressed sorrow for his actions following a 25-year prison sentence for fraud-related offenses. Bankman-Fried shared in an ABC News email interview that he contemplates his wrongdoing daily and never considered his actions to be illegal.

During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan criticized Bankman-Fried for evasiveness and claimed that he showed no remorse for his crimes. In response to this, Bankman-Fried mentioned in the interview that he is indeed remorseful and described the pain he felt for losing what his colleagues had dedicated themselves to.

Bankman-Fried also addressed the issue of delayed payments to impacted customers, expressing his anguish that they have yet to receive the full amounts at current prices. He stated that these payments should have been processed much earlier, back in November 2022.

The FTX founder argued that customer payments would have been expedited if he or another employee had remained as CEO. He criticized the decision not to restart the exchange, which he believed could have brought long-term value.

Bankman-Fried's legal team is preparing an appeal against the conviction, claiming an unfair trial due to the law firm representing FTX's new ownership. Despite the potential appeal, Bankman-Fried remarked that he has lost everything.
