Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has filed an appeal against his conviction on charges of an $8 billion fraud scheme, claiming errors by Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.

Accusations of Judicial Bias

Bankman-Fried's appeal, filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, targets Judge Lewis A. Kaplan's conduct during his trial in New York last year. Bankman-Fried's lawyer, Alexandra Shapiro, stated that Judge Kaplan exhibited partiality against her client throughout the trial. Shapiro argued that Kaplan unfairly influenced the jury through his behavior, accelerating their deliberations and leading to a quick guilty verdict.

Conflict Surrounding FTX Collapse

Bankman-Fried was convicted in November on seven counts, including fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. Prosecutors dubbed him the mastermind behind one of the decade's largest financial scams, likening his operation to Bernie Madoff's notorious Ponzi scheme. Judge Kaplan sentenced him to 25 years in prison in March. Bankman-Fried maintains that he never intended to misappropriate funds or deceive investors. His appeal is the latest step in a four-month battle against his conviction, part of the ongoing legal fallout from FTX's collapse nearly two years ago.

Further Developments

Other key figures in the FTX case have also faced legal actions, including former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison. Ellison, who has entered a plea deal, hopes for supervised release. Another FTX executive, Ryan Salame, remains embroiled in campaign finance investigations.

The legal battles surrounding FTX's collapse continue to unfold, shedding light on the extensive financial schemes and their implications for all involved.
