FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, convicted of fraud and conspiracy charges, has appealed his fraud conviction and requested a new trial. On Friday, he filed a 102-page brief accusing U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan of being unfair and biased in his judgment over the FTX collapse.
FTX Collapse and Charges Against Bankman-Fried
Following the FTX debacle that led to a prolonged crypto winter, Bankman-Fried was convicted of multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy charges. Some describe it as one of the biggest financial frauds in American history, with the seven charges totaling up to 115 years of prison sentence.
Claims of Unfair Trial
Bankman-Fried alleges that Judge Kaplan’s ruling was unfair and biased. Lawyers state that the judge frequently criticized and mocked Bankman-Fried during the trial.
Requests for Leniency
Bankman-Fried’s family and acquaintances have pleaded for the judge’s leniency, citing his psychiatric conditions. His mother, Barbara Fried, stated that he suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and that imprisonment could further worsen his condition.
Sam Bankman-Fried continues to maintain his innocence and is seeking a new trial.
