The US Justice Department has announced the authorized seizure of over $2.8 million in cryptocurrency as part of a criminal case against an alleged ransomware operator.
Details of the Seizure
The US Justice Department reported six unsealed warrants for the seizure of $2.8 million in cryptocurrency from a wallet controlled by Ianis Aleksandrovich Antropenko. In addition, $70,000 in cash and a luxury vehicle were seized.
Charges Against Antropenko
Antropenko has been charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The notice indicates that the seized assets are proceeds from ransomware activity.
Context of Cryptocurrency Seizures by US Government
This seizure is part of a broader US government policy to combat the use of cryptocurrency in illegal activities. The mentioned assets were laundered by various means, including using the cryptocurrency mixing service ChipMixer. Earlier this week, the Justice Department also reported seizing about $1 million in cryptocurrency from the BlackSuit group.
The seizure of assets in the investigation of ransomware-related crimes highlights the growing role of cryptocurrency in such offenses and government efforts to prevent the illegal use of digital currencies.
