Shomari Figures, a member of the Alabama Democratic party, emerged victorious in a runoff for a seat in the US House of Representatives by getting 61% of the vote. Figures, known for being a progressive candidate with ties to the Washington establishment, benefitted from receiving nearly $2.7 million in support from a political action committee (PAC) associated with the cryptocurrency industry in independent spending.
Figures' alignment with digital financial issues and innovations during the campaign appealed to Protect Progress PAC, an offshoot of Fairshake, resulting in a financial boost from industry sources. With a focus on using industry funding for advertising, Figures was able to shift the advantage in the 2nd Congressional District from the Republicans to the Democrats, leading to his success.
In contrast to his opponents, who received substantial direct contributions for their campaigns, Figures struggled to gather just over $400,000 in direct contributions. However, with strong backing from digital assets industry players like Ripple Labs and Coinbase, Protect Progress PAC played a crucial role in helping Figures achieve victory.
