This weekend, Solana, known for fast and low-cost transactions, achieved a record peak of over 100,000 transactions per second, marking a significant event in the crypto community.
Record Transaction Levels
On Sunday, August 17, Solana processed over 100,000 TPS when a single block handled 43,016 successful transactions and 50 failures, totaling 107,540 TPS. This event made Solana the first major blockchain to reach such a level on its mainnet.
Most Transactions as 'noop'
However, the majority of the transactions were 'noop' program calls — instructions that don’t perform real actions but meet Solana’s requirement for at least one instruction per transaction. These lightweight calls stress-test the network and do not reflect regular token transfers or trades.
Network Status and Activity
According to Mert Mumtaz, Solana could theoretically handle 80,000 to 100,000 TPS for real operations, such as token transfers or oracle updates. In practice, however, the network runs much slower. Solscan reports around 3,700 TPS, two-thirds of which consist of vote transactions from validators. Real throughput is closer to 1,000 TPS. Despite this, activity on Solana remains strong, with memecoins making up a significant portion, where Pump.fun holds 62% of the total value locked in the decentralized finance ecosystem.
Solana's record in transaction levels marks an important moment for the blockchain industry, despite the real throughput being significantly lower than the figures achieved during this peak.
