Solana Foundation Takes Action Against Validators Engaged in Malicious Activities

Jun 10, 2024

The Solana Foundation has recently taken a significant step by removing several validator operators from its delegation program due to their involvement in sandwich attacks. This strict enforcement action, led by Solana Validator Relations Leader Tim Garcia, underscores the foundation's dedication to eradicating harmful practices within its network.

Rationale Behind Solana's Actions Against Mempools

The crackdown specifically targets operators active in mempools facilitating sandwich attacks. In a statement on the Solana Foundation's Discord server, Garcia declared that these enforcement measures are final and will persist in identifying and eliminating individuals engaged in such detrimental activities. These actions reaffirm the foundation's commitment to maintaining network integrity and safeguarding user interests.

Understanding Sandwich Attacks

Sandwich attacks revolve around placing two transactions around a victim's transaction to manipulate prices and profit from the price difference, contravening the foundation's regulations. Helius co-founder Mert Mumtaz stressed that expelling validators involved in such activities aligns with the foundation's ethos of promoting ethical conduct and ensuring user safety.

The delegation program, which involves delegating SOL coins to validators, eliminates the necessity for substantial coin holdings but mandates adherence to ethical standards and good practices. Violators are permanently ousted from the program, leading to the forfeiture of all delegated stakes received from the foundation.

Although ousted validators can still contribute to the Solana blockchain due to its permissionless nature, they forfeit foundation subsidies.

Addressing Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) Issues on Solana

Maximal Extractable Value issues within Solana encompass manipulative transactions for profit, including front-running and sandwich attacks, resulting in increased costs and slippage for users. The foundation's interventions are designed to mitigate these challenges, ensuring a level playing field and secure network environment.

Practical Considerations for Users

  • Eliminating validators involved in sandwich attacks bolsters network security.
  • Validators must uphold ethical standards to avail foundation support.
  • Solana Foundation's initiatives target reducing transaction exploitation and safeguarding user welfare.

By imposing stringent regulations and ejecting offenders, the Solana Foundation aims to uphold the integrity of its network and shield users from exploitative behaviors, fostering a dependable and efficient blockchain ecosystem. This strategy guarantees that only ethical and high-performing validators benefit from the foundation's backing.
