Japanese electronics company Sony, in collaboration with Singapore-based Web3 infrastructure provider Startale, has announced the development of its blockchain called Soneium.

Sony's Plans for Soneium

The development of the Soneium blockchain was announced on August 23, with the test network set to go live in the coming days. This will allow developers to experiment and build applications, paving the way for a public release. “Soneium aims to connect Web3 with everyday internet services, making blockchain technology more accessible,” the project’s Twitter account reports.

Technological Features of Soneium

Sony positions the new blockchain as a public network aimed at making Web3 technology accessible and mainstream. The Soneium testnet will run on optimistic rollup technology built using the Optimism OP Stack. It will also integrate Startale’s zero-knowledge Ethereum virtual machine to provide liquidity, as well as fungible and non-fungible tokens. Sony claims that its new blockchain infrastructure will help protect content rights and offer new profit-sharing models for creators.

The Future of Blockchain and Web3

The company believes that Soneium can help decentralize the internet while tackling the challenges of limited adoption and a lack of meaningful use cases. In its first year, the project will focus on onboarding core Web3 users, as the technology and community are not ready for the general public. In the second year, the plan is to integrate various Sony products onto the platform, including Sony Music, Sony Pictures, and Sony Bank. In the third year, other enterprises and decentralized applications will be allowed to build on Soneium. The goal for the project is to achieve “internet-level scalability,” which could make it more adaptable for everyday users. Earlier this year, Sony announced a partnership with Siemens to create industrial applications for the metaverse.

Sony and Startale aim to create the new blockchain platform Soneium to better protect content rights and provide new profit-sharing models for creators. The project is focused on overcoming the scalability and interoperability challenges of Web3.
