Telegram founder Pavel Durov revealed on September 6 that the platform will be cutting certain features, including media uploads to the 'Telegraph' blog platform and disabling the 'People Nearby' feature.
Removal of Media Uploads
Pavel Durov stated that media uploads to the blogging platform 'Telegraph' were 'misused' by malicious actors, although the vast majority of the Telegram community did not abuse these features. Durov noted that the '0.001% involved in illicit activities' pose a disproportionate risk to the majority of law-abiding Telegram users.
Disabling 'People Nearby' Feature
Telegram will also disable individual geolocation tracking, replacing it with a 'businesses nearby' option. Durov explained that this personal geolocation feature was used by only a tiny minority of Telegram users.
Moderation Policy Update
Pavel Durov highlighted that this year the Moscow team is committed to turning Telegram moderation from an area of criticism into one of praise.
These changes reflect Telegram's efforts to improve safety and moderation policies to protect its users.
