The U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed that stablecoin issuer Tether played a significant role in recovering stolen funds from a fraudulent scheme.
The Scam and Its Aftermath
In December 2024, impersonators deceived a political donor into transferring $250,300 in USDT as a contribution by using a lookalike email address of the Trump committee co-chair, changing an 'I' to a lowercase 'l' to mislead the victim.
Tether's Role in Fund Recovery
The Justice Department acknowledged Tether's assistance in recovering $40,300 of the stolen amount, stating, 'The Department of Justice would like to acknowledge Tether for its assistance in effectuating the transfer of these assets.'
Challenges for Rivals and Responses to Allegations
While Tether has become an example of active cooperation with law enforcement, its main rival, Circle, has faced scrutiny over its alleged failure to investigate the use of its USDC stablecoin by hackers and other malicious entities.
The recovery of funds represents a significant success for Tether, highlighting the importance of cooperation between stablecoin issuers and law enforcement in combating financial crime.
