The Vatican Library, founded in the 15th century, has embarked on a new approach by embracing NFTs to enrich its online interaction and cultivate connections with supporters, particularly within Italy.
This groundbreaking initiative, established through a collaboration with NTT DATA Italia, is aimed at harnessing Web3 technology to broaden the library's virtual community and offer access to its extensive array of manuscripts.
Originally initiated in Japan and now expanding to Europe, the project commences with Italy as its first target audience. Italian users who promote the 'Vatican Library Web3 Support Project' on various platforms before July 16th will be granted a Silver NFT, enabling them to view high-quality images of 15 manuscripts. Additionally, individuals who contribute to the library's cause will receive a Gold NFT, granting them access to 21 manuscripts.
These NFTs are characterized as non-transferable and 'soulbound,' permanently linked to the recipient's digital wallet. This ensures their unique and enduring status as a token of support. A demonstration on OpenSea has proven that Polygon-based NFTs have been distributed among 419 distinct owners.
NTT DATA Italia has played a pivotal role in the preservation of the Vatican Library's historical records. Through its digital archive service, AMLAD, the company has globally implemented strategies to enhance the library's conservation efforts, safeguarding its impressive collection consisting of 180,000 manuscripts, over 1.5 million books, 200,000 photographs, more than 150,000 prints, and in excess of 300,000 coins and medals.
The CEO of NTT DATA Italia, Ludovico Diaz, expressed the organization's ongoing commitment to making the invaluable cultural heritage of the Vatican Library accessible. He stressed the continuation of their vital conservation work, expanding the utilization of blockchain technology across various sectors.
Don Mauro Mantovani, the Prefect of the library, underscored that this undertaking aligns with the institution's mission to promote research and scientific progress. Mantovani highlighted the significance of NTT DATA's initiatives in forging connections between the library and new communities, as well as upcoming projects involving diverse partners globally.
In the future, the Vatican Library aims to introduce immersive experiences for users to delve into its historical assets through extended reality. This endeavor underscores the library's dedication to adopting technological advancements to safeguard and disseminate its cultural legacy.
By incorporating NFTs and blockchain technology, the Vatican Library is not only safeguarding its historical treasures but also engaging a contemporary, technology-savvy audience. This initiative serves as a testament to how traditional institutions can adapt to modern digital trends to broaden their influence and appeal.
