Thailand has announced the launch of the new crypto payment system, TouristDigiPay, which will allow tourists to convert digital assets into baht starting August 18, 2025.
Launch of TouristDigiPay
The TouristDigiPay system will be launched on August 18, 2025, for international tourists, allowing them to convert cryptocurrency into Thai baht. This project is initiated by the government, involving officials from ministries and financial regulators.
Objectives and Mechanics of the System
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, the system aims to enhance the tourist experience and promote Thailand as a crypto-friendly destination. The payment system will be limited to converting digital assets like BTC and ETH into baht, with no cash withdrawal option.
Limitations and Potential Market Impact
Conversion will be capped at 500,000 baht per month, and there will be no direct merchant crypto payments. The system is expected to help stabilize crypto transactions in the country and improve monitoring of tourist spending.
